Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Tuesday launched “Jai Kisan rin maafi” yojana – in a bid to fulfill his major poll promise of farm loan waiver. Addressing the Presser on the occasion, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister said this scheme is an “investment” in the economy of Madhya Pradesh to strengthen the farmers. About 55 lakh farmers in Madhya Pradesh would be benefitted by the scheme which would require about Rs 50 crore, he said while hailing the scheme.

He added that the government is working on the issue of the loans taken by the farmers from sahukar, the private money lenders active in the rural area, and how these loans can also be waved.

He added that “we are working on how to end private lenders in the state and also looking on how to solve the problem of such farmers”

Terming it as a milestone for the state’s economy, Kamal Nath said, “The Madhya Pradesh economy has been agriculture- based. About 70 percent of people are associated with agriculture and allied sectors. Hence, this loan waiver is an investment in the economy, which can’t be strengthened without farmers, CM said at the launch of the scheme.

The Madhya Pradesh cabinet on January 5 gives nod to a farm loan waiver scheme that aims to waive farm loan worth Rs 2 lakh for each farmer in the state. Kamal Nath led Congress government had also extended the cut off date for farm loan waiver from March 31, 2018, to December 12, 2018.

With this move, Farmers who had taken loan till December 12, 2018, will now be eligible under Farm Loan Waiver Scheme of the State government. Earlier while assuming Chief Ministerial Kamal Nath spelled out details of the scheme by saying that only loan amount outstanding as on March 31, 2018, will be eligible for the waiver.

In a run to the Assembly Polls that concluded last month in the state, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had announced the ‘Farm Loan’He had said that if the Congress comes to power, loans upto Rs 2 lakh would be waved off.

Within one hour after taking the loan, Kamal Nath had signed the “government file related to the loan waiving“.

On how the state government plans to arrange funds for the farm loan waiver scheme considering the economic condition of the state, Nath said, “We had studied before making the loan waiver announcement. I have talked to the banks. The BJP itself has accepted that they have left a debt-ridden state behind.”

Farmers who have registered themselves to pay GST and are paying income tax, cannot avail benefits under this scheme, he said.

Asked if the ‘Bhavantar Yojana’ launched by the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government would continue, Nath said, “We are studying the scheme and will present it in a new form after removing its shortcomings.”

Nath symbolically received the loan waiver forms of some farmers from around Bhopal. The loan waiver forms could be submitted till February 5 and farmers would start getting the benefits from February 22.
