Rahul Gandhi before embarking on an official tour to the European nations proclaimed that major reorganisation has to take place in the party. Before the 2019 elections, the major re-structuring took place to facilitate and strengthen the party structure to enhance the standing of the party in the upcoming polls. One of the major appointment this time was Ahmed Patel, being appointed as the party’s treasurer. He took up the place of Moti Lal Vora.

The role of the treasurer is always a very pivotal when it comes to properly funding a campaign. As the party preps itself for the upcoming polls, the funds and the finances need to be handled with proper care. As Congress has recently not been able to congregate a greater number of companies for funding the party the excessive dependence on crowd-sourced funds may become problematic for the party.

“Ahmed bhai’s ability to win over adversity is something we cannot do without.” said a Congress member.

Not just the post of the treasurer but even several members of the CWC underwent significant changes. Former Lok Sabha speaker, Meira Kumar received a permanent invite to one of the highest bodies of Congress. CP Joshi, on the other hand, was removed as in charge of the northeast states. In his place, Luizhinho Falerio was appointed to look into the northeast (except Assam). Former minister Anand Sharma was appointed as the Chairperson of the AICC foreign affairs department

Patel upon being inducted as the treasurer has asked all its departments and affiliates to mobilise funds. “Patel has been looking after Congress finances along with Motilal Vora for five years now. Today’s appointment formalises a job he has been already doing. The appointment cannot have come at a more opportune time. The party is facing a financial crunch and he alone can reverse the situation,” a senior Congress leader said.
