Congress president Rahul Gandhi officially kicked off preparations of the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh by appointing the senior leader and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh as the chairman of the coordination committee for the polls.

As the chief of this important committee, Digvijaya Singh will have several crucial functions like helping the high command in allocating tickets, coordinating with other committees, preparing for rallies and public meetings, and overseeing Congress party’s election campaigns.

These tasks have been allotted to Singh just days after he finished his ‘apolitical’ six-months-long Narmada Yatra in which he traveled over 3,000 kilometers along the banks of the river on foot along with his wife and his supporters. He had alleged after concluding his Yatra that the state’s BJP-led government has indulged in corruption under the garb of protecting and cleaning the Narmada.

Political experts observed that Singh’s rise in the state just months ahead of elections spells trouble for Lok Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is hoping to be the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh but is already facing strong competition from party veteran Kamal Nath in this regard.

Apart from Digvijaya Singh, Rahul Gandhi also made appointments for the party’s election planning committee, election campaign committee, disciplinary action committee, manifesto committee and media team. He even named presidents for 20 districts in the state.
