In the upcoming West Bengal assembly by-polls, Congress party and CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) have announced to collaborate. Both the parties will share three seats in the coming elections.

The decision has been taken to limit the strength of BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) and TMC (Trinamool Congress) in the state. In a late-night meeting of both the parties, the leaders have decided the names of assembly from where the contest will happen.

It has been decided that Congress party would contest from Kaliaganj seat in North Dinajpur district and Kharagpur seat in West Midnapore district. While CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) will contest from Karimpur assembly seat in Nadia district.

Upcoming by-polls are scheduled because seats in the mentioned constituency fell vacant. Kaliaganj seat fell vacant because sitting Congress MLA Parmathanath Roy died. The Kharagpur seat fell empty owing to the fact that the sitting BJP MLA Dilip Ghosh won parliamentary polls from Midnapore Lok Sabha seat. Trinamool Congress’s sitting MLA from Karimpur, Mahua Moitra won Lok Sabha polls of 2019 from Krishnnanagar seat, that led to the vacancy across the third seat.

CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Congress had earlier come together for 2016 assembly polls also, but their team failed to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress party. In 2019 elections, both parties were unable to secure an alliance because the talks over seat-sharing formula failed.

As a result of which, both parties performed badly in the Lok Sabha polls. Out of all, Congress just won one constituency and lost deposits in all other 38 constituencies. CPI-M failed more miserably, losing its deposit across all 39 constituencies.

Now, after such a poor performance, Congress and CPI(M) have come together to secure an alliance and hope to limit the growing profile of TMC and BJP in the state.

  1. In spite of Yechuri’s tactical line of CPM-Congress alliance and/seat adjustmentvflew into their face once again West Bengal Unit of CPM has surrendered to Congress. There will be no impact as their combined votes will never exceed that of TMC and BJP and will endup facing crushing defeat… Stubborn CPM Petty bourgeois leadership refuses to learn from past mistake and it’s traditional line of equidistance from.BJP and Congress!
