All India Congress Committee office-bearers and heads of various state units have conveyed to the top leadership that they want the election of new party president to take place asap. This has given speculations to Congress President Sonia Gandhi convening a meeting of Congress Working Committee members to elevate Rahul Gandhi to the top of party ranks in the coming days.

The development comes on a day when Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee passed a resolution seeking Rahul’s elevation as the party president. One of the top leaders in Congress stated that once the working committee meets, the remaining process will not take more than 10 days to announce the new president. According to rumours, the party is going with all the constitutional and democratic means and procedures to elect its new president.

The Congress Party has announced a mega rally in Chikamaglur district of Karnataka between around 19th – 21st November. According to sources, this will be the first major rally addressed by Rahul Gandhi post his election as party president. He is expected to formally take over the charges by the end of this year. A tentative date has not been announced yet.

Sonia Gandhi, the current president of AICC has held the post for over 19 years. According to the leaders aware of the development, the working committee might hold a meeting as early as next week and the procedure for the election of new party president will be announced. The party has asked for the nominations and in case there are no other nominations, Rahul Gandhi will be announced as the party president soon after the deadline for the nomination is over.

Off late, Rahul Gandhi has been quite aggressive with his campaigning ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. He has attacked the current Gujarat and Central administration repeatedly over issues such as GST and Demonetisation. In Gujarat, he has held various meetings with the traders and businessmen in order to gain their support and the campaign seems to have gotten him results. For the first time in last 22 years, BJP seems to be worried about the Gujarat elections and it has fielded all its senior leaders to campaign in the state.

Elections in Himachal Pradesh will take place on November 9th, whereas, the elections in Gujarat will take place on December 9th and December 14th. The counting of votes for both these states will take place on 18th December.
