Ahead of the Delhi assembly polls, senior Congress leader Parlad Singh Sawhney left his party to join Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday. He was a four-time MLA from Chandni Chowk constituency.

Rajya Sabha member and AAP leader Sanjay Singh, as quoted by ANI, said, ” We are happy to announce that Parlad Singh Sawhney, who was a four-time MLA from Chandni Chowk and one time Parishad, has joined AAP. He is one of the strongest pillars who will soon be going to work for AAP. We are very happy.

At the event, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other prominent leaders of the party were also present. Arvind Kejriwal also expressed his happiness over the induction of former Congress leader and posted a tweeted a message welcoming him. Kejriwal also said that there are several “good people” who want to join AAP and serve the people of Delhi better.

Reacting to this development in Delhi politics, former AAP leader Alka Lamba expressed her disappointment with the party. She attacked the AAP party of inducting Parlad Singh Sawhney as she contested against him in the 2015 elections.

Parlad Singh Sawhney started his political journey by contesting the civic polls from Mori Gate in 1977, however, he was defeated in his maiden attempt. But he won the Mori Gate ward in 1983. He held the Chandni Chowk for four terms till he lost it to Alka Lamba in 2015. Before that, he had won the seat in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013.

He further said that he does not expect to get a ticket from the party and he is just impressed by the good work that the party was doing in the field of education, health. He said, “You do not need to tell the people of Delhi to vote for AAP. They will tell you on their own that they will vote for AAP in the upcoming elections. They are very happy that Mr. Kejriwal delivered on his promise that electricity bills will be half and water will be free.”

Speaking on his former party, Pralad Singh Sawhney said that there are ‘wrong people’ coming in front of Congress party.
