For the upcoming assembly polls in Thiruvananthapuram, Congress-led United Democratic Front announced its candidate for the Pala constituency by-polls. The alliance has picked Jose Tom Pulikkunnel as its candidate.

Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, while speaking to the media, said “We will contest the by-poll as a united front to continue legacy of KM Mani. Jose Tom Pulikkunnel is our candidate.” Pala constituency seat has always been one of the strongholds of United Democratic Front. In Lok Sabha elections of 2019, UDF secured an easy win over LDF with the majority of 33,472 votes over the latter.

It has been reported that the discussion was taken after serious political discussions and considerations. Earlier, Kerala Congress (M) was seen divided over the selection of the name. The party was also witnessing some scuffle between veteran leader PJ Joseph and Jose K Mani for the control of the party’s command. According to close sources, Pulikkunnel was proposed by Thomas Chazhikadan-headed Kerala Congress election sub-committee.

The by-poll in the Pala constituency is slated to take place on 23 September. Owing to the death of veteran Kerala Congress leader KM Mani, the seat fell vacant. Left Democratic Front (LDF) has fielded Mani C Kappen against Pulikkunnel.

Jose Tom Pulikkunnel will be contesting the election for the first time. He was the general secretary of the Kerala University in the early stages of his political career. In 1991, He went onto become a member of the Pala division in the Kottayam district council.
