After their demand for discussing the alleged assault by police on ‘para-teachers’ was put down in West Bengal assembly, Congress and Left front staged a walkout on Tuesday.

The demand for the discussion was put up by Left Front legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty. He said that his demand of bringing an adjournment motion to the assembly for discussing the matter was rejected by West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee.

After walking out from the assembly in a dramatic manner, the parties protested outside the assembly hall. Sujan Chakraborty told media persons that the West Bengal government is neither allowing the opposition to raise their concerns nor discuss them. He called the assault on para-teachers as undemocratic.

On August 17, Para-teachers were sitting on a hunger strike in Nadia’s Kalyani region near the bus terminal and railway station. They were sitting to protest against the state government. They were demanding a salary hike and up-gradation of their status as permanent teachers. But Police resorted to Lathi-charge thrashing them. Many teachers who were sitting on strike suffered injuries.

It has also been reported that around 10 prominent personalities of the state have written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the unfateful incident.
