In a Shocking move, Congress Stalwart and Stauch Leader DY Patil on Sunday joined Sharad Pawar led Nationalist Congress Party. NCP National Spokesperson Ankush Kakade confirmed that Patil has joined the NCP.

DY Patil son and former State Minister Satej Patil have also confirmed that his father has joined the Pawar led NCP on Sunday in Pune.

“As a family, it is a surprising decision for everyone. NCP leadership should have intimated someone in our family about his decision, but we feed sad that it did not happen in that way” he said. “However, my political stand is clear. I have been working with Congress party for a long time, and I will continue to do so in future as well, DY Patil’s son Sajet Patil said.

NCP Spokesperson Ankush Kakade informing about the development said, “He was in touch with us and today he called me expressing his willingness to work for NCP. I invited him and completed the procedure and also handed over him the letter of him becoming a member of NCP.

On asking about Patil’s role in the party, Ankush Kakade said, “I was not aware of the details. He must have discussed it with Sharad Pawar about his role and responsibilities in the NCP.”

Patil was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council as a Congress candidate in 1957 and remained in office until 1962. He was the member of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha from 1967-78. In both the 1967 and 1972 elections, he was elected from Panhala Vidhan Sabha constituency. He was appointed the Governor of Tripura state on 21 November 2009 and took the oath of office and secrecy on 27 November 2009. He was appointed as the Governor of Bihar on 9 March 2012.

He is also the chancellor of DY Patil Deemed University.

The DYP group owns a major cricket stadium in Navi Mumbai- DY Patil Stadium, which has been facing financial troubles for a long time after the BCCI stopped holding any cricket matches there.
