Congress-team reaches Imphal to assess NRC condition post-exercise; Members to submit ground report to Sonia Gandhi

As per the proposed plan, the Congress party sent a delegation of senior party leaders from Delhi to North-Eastern states which reached Imphal on Sunday. The delegation has been tasked to observe the condition of Assam state after the implementation of the NRC exercise.

Party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi prepared a team of All India Congress Committee which includes Mukul Wasnik, Jairam Ramesh, Jitendra Singh, Manickam Tagore, and Mohammad Ali Khan.

The team will also be taking feedback on the issue from the local population. Members will visit Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur in the coming days. The leaders will also be taking the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Bill and submitting a report to the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

Party has also constituted a different committee that has been tasked with the preparation of the final policy on the issue. The members of this committee comprise former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Kapil Sibal, Mukul Sangma, Lal Thanhawala, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, AK Antony, KC Venugopal (Party Secretary), Luizinho Falerio (North East in-charge of AICC), Gaurav Gogoi, Ripun Bora, Sushmita Dev, PK Biswas and Kewekhape.

NRC Exercise

NRC (National Register of Citizens) was executed in the Assam state in a bid to remove the illegal immigrants from the neighboring nation, Bangladesh. The final list was published on 31 August that saw the exclusion of 19 lakh people. A total of 3.11 crore names have been included in the list.

This caused a massive political upheaval between the ruling government and the opposition parties.
