DISHA legislation was passed recently by the Andhra Pradesh government that enables stringent provisions in the rape-related offenses. According to the act, there is a death penalty for rape and it also reduces the judgment period in such cases to just 21 working days from the previous four months. The special court will also be set up to deal with the rape crimes in a stipulated time-bound manner.

The Act also envisages the completion of investigation in seven days and trial in 14 working days. The Disha Act also prescribes life imprisonment for other sexual offenses against children and includes Indian Penal Code Sections 354G and 354F. The law also contains punishment for the harassment of women through online social media.

The DISHA Bill was passed in the state assembly after the nation went in protest mode over the Hyderabad sexual assault incident. On the passage of the bill, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy had said, “The investigation in such cases must be completed within a week and trial – within two weeks. He added that the criminals must be hanged within 21 working days. Not just that, people who post vulgar comments about women on social media will be tracked down as well.”
