The general secretary of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), Roshan Giri alleged the Banerjee government for not dealing with the demand for a separate state correctly. He said that Mamata Banerjee is handling the situation from the law and order view but actually it is  a political situation and should be handled politically.

It has been 20 days that the GJM are demonstrating protest in the hills of West Benagal, demanding for a separate state for the Gorkhas. Even after harsh steps taken by the Banerjee government to suppress the protest, the GJM are firm on their point. The protest turned violent when raids were conducted at the residence of GJM President Bimal Gurung.

GJM has called for an indefinite shut down in the region, even vacating the boarding schools. Internet facilities remains suspended and the district has decided to extend the shut down for another 8 days.

GJM has also urged the Centre to intervene in the issue, but no prominent action has been taken yet by the government at the centre.
