Like many other states Maharashtra had also announced ‘in principle’ a loan waive off for the farmers to restore peace in the state. A six member high-power ministerial committee, constituted by the government, met members of various farmers’ groups to negotiate on their demands and the decision to waive of farmers loan was taken.

Though it was not decided at that time whether complete loan waiver will be passed or will it have some conditions with it. Now Maharashtra government is planning to set the limit of 1 lakh per farmer for the loan waive off. However it will be difficult battle to gain consensus on this decision. The farmers group has already started criticizing this decision of the government saying that just 1 lakh will not help as the farmers had taken lakhs of loan.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar at his residence in New Delhi on Friday to discuss about the issue. During the meeting Fadnavis gave his explanations as to how a complete loan waive off will not be in favour of the state. He was accompanied by revenue minister Chandrakant Patil, State NCP chief Sunil Tatkare and NCP leaders Jayant Patil, Dilip Walse Patil for the meeting.

Fadnavis and Pawar also held one-on-one meeting later. No decision has been reached yet, even the NCP has not cleared weather it will support the decision of Maharashtra government to set the limit to 1 lakh for the farmers loan waiver.
