Darjeeling enters 40th day of indefinite shut down in the hills with all essential services including the delivery of food items and the internet banned in the area. Except for medicine shops, all the other shops, restaurants, hotels, schools and colleges remain closed.

In the hills of West Bengal, the Gorkhas have been protesting for more than a month now demanding a separate Gorkhaland for them. The police officials reported that though no violent incident has been reported since Sunday night but the situation still remains tense.

In order to assess the situation, The Director General of Police Surajit Kar Purkayastha, along with ADGP (law and order) Anuj Sharma and other senior police officers will visit the area on Monday to examine the law and order conditions in the region.

Police and security forces have kept a tight vigil at every entry and exit routes and the armies are patrolling on the streets of Darjeeling.

Some political party activists, dressed in traditional Nepali attire, were seen distributing food on the streets. They even carried out rallies shouting out slogans demanding Gorkhaland.
