Election Commission of India has recently issued notices to six state parties on the matter of revoking their status of being recognized as a “state party”.

The parties that received ECI’s notice include Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC). Election Commission of India has questioned these parties on why their status shouldn’t be revoked since they have been unable to fulfill the criteria to be recognized as a state party.

Criteria to be recognized as State Party-

According to the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, the election watchdog has brought out five criteria for listing political parties as a ‘state party’-

  1. Party should have secured at least 6% of the valid vote & win at least 2 seats in an Assembly General Election
  2. It has a won at least 3% of the seats or at least 3 seats, whichever is more, in an Assembly General Election
  3. It is able to secure at least 8% of the total valid vote in an Assembly or a Lok Sabha General Election
  4. The party secures at least 6% of the valid vote & win at least 1 seats in a Lok Sabha General Election
  5. It wins at least 1 out of every 25 seats from a state in a Lok Sabha General Election

Interestingly, several National Parties such as NCP (Nationalist Congress Party), TMC (Trinamool Congress), and CPI (Communist Party of India) have also received notices on the matter as to why their national party-status should not be revoked after the bad performance in Lok Sabha elections of 2019.

All the concerned parties have requested ECI to give them a chance of hearing so that they can prove their majority. To this, ECI has agreed to hear out the explanation from parties.
