The decision to withdraw general consent was taken in the view of infighting within the CBI that has “eroded the credibility” of the agency. Naidu  accused Modi government of using central agencies, including the CBI, against political opponents. However, critics of Naidu link his decision with “impending” CBI investigation against TDP leaders”.

Last month, raids were conducted on TDP leader CM Ramesh too. He is also a close aide of  Naidu. CBI special director Rakesh Asthana alleged that Ramesh tried to mediate on the behalf of Hyderabad-based businessman Sathish Sana in the bribery case. To this allegation, Ramesh responded by saying that BJP president Amit Shah wanted to frame him.
