The Election commission on Friday barred the Nadia district BJP president Mahadev Sarkar to campaign for 48 hours for allegedly making sexually colored statements attacking Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Mahua Moitra.

The ban has come into effect from Friday 4 pm and shall continue To stay in effect till 4 pm on April 28, a day before the Lok Sabha polling for the fourth phase of elections has to take place.

Under Article 324 of the constitution and all the powers enabling in this behalf, Election Commission barred Mahadev Sarkar from holding any public meetings, road shows, public rallies, public processions, interviews, public utterances in the media in connection with the Lok Sabha Polls for 48 hours.

The Election Commission in its statement said that “political parties and their candidates should refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life not connected with any public activities of the leaders or worker of the other political parties.”

The Supreme court sought the direction of Election Commission on Thursday to take necessary action on the complaint filed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Mahua Moitra alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mahadev Sarkar made sexually colored remarks on her. A three-judge bench of Justice Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna headed by the chief justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the Election Commission to examine the complaint and take necessary action against the alleged.

The TMC leader Mahua Moitra has been campaigning for the Krishna Nagar Lok Sabha constituency for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal will be held in all seven phases of the polls. The state had three phases of elections on April 11, April 18, and April 23. The remaining four phases of elections will be held on April 29, May 6, May 12, and May 19. The results will be announced on May 23.
