As criticisms of fake news happen everywhere, social media platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp are coming up with more strategies to counter fake news and misinterpretation among the public.

Facebook has recently removed 1 million of its accounts. A statement released by Facebook’s Managing Director and Vice President Ajit Mohan states how the social media platform will contribute its part in stopping the spread of fake news and making fair elections happen. Facebook does this all with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques.

Facebook had initially removed almost 700 pages belonging to the individuals working in the IT cell of Indian National Congress. Facebook had mentioned that it was removing these accounts because its ‘inauthentic behaviour’.

At that time the social media platform had also removed many pages and accounts on its platform as well as Instagram mentioning the same reasons. The accounts were linked to a network of Pak origin.

Earlier the messaging app named ‘WhatsApp’ had come against the propagation of fake news and misinterpretation.

WhatsApp had inserted a new feature on phones with the updated version of the app showing how many times a message had been forwarded. WhatsApp is also on the verge of building a new feature which allows group admins to restrict the forwarded messages of its members.
