A CPM central committee meeting will be held for the discussion on nominating general secretary Sitaram Yechury, as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls for the third time.

The meeting is likely to face heated discussion as Prakash Karat faction of the Polit Bureau and Pinarayi Vijayan group-dominated Kerala unit may oppose the proposal. Karat camp has been arguing that a third term for Yechury will violate the two-term norm, Bengal leaders argue that the CC can change the rule in view of the “unprecedented situation” out of the BJP rule. It also said that it would weaken the party if the general secretary gets elected with the support of Congress MLAs.

Party veteran VS Achuthanandan has been supporting the 3rd term for Yechury and even wrote a letter to the leadership in support of another term for Yechury.

Karat camp also said that Yechury will represent as CPM candidate and not a joint candidate of  Bengal CPM and Congress for whom Congress MLAs will extend support. As the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Central Committee members are appearing divided on the proposal, Bengal CPM might solve the dispute by voting.

However, Sitaram Yechury continues to maintain his statement that he is not interested in another term.
