Ashok-Gehlot

The tradition of reversing the decision of the outgoing government is not new to Rajasthan Politics and its seems like newly elected Ashok Gehlot government is following the same tradition. If reports to be believed, Rajasthan government is scrutinizing all decisions of the Vasundhara Raje government in the last six months.

Earlier, In 2013, Raje in the first cabinet meeting had announced a review of decisions taken by the outgoing Gehlot government during its last six months. That was an answer to the 2008-13 Gehlot government setting up the Mathur Commission to investigate the alleged Rs 22,000-crore corruption charges against the Raje government (2003-2008).

However, the Commission was later declared illegal by the Court by it had made a tradition of scrutinizing the decisions of the outgoing government.

Ashok Gehlot led government in its first Cabinet meeting has decided to remove the condition of minimum qualification required to contest civic elections, which was made mandatory by the previous government.
Earlier, In 2013 Raje Government made it mandatory for people contesting Zila Parishad, panchayat Samit, and municipal elections to have passed Class 10. While those contesting sarpanch elections to have passed Class 8 and those standing for sarpanch elections in panchayats in scheduled areas to have cleared Class 5.
However, Removal of the minimum qualification condition was part of the Congress’s manifesto for the just concluded elections.
Health Minister Raghu Sharma while talking to media persons after the First Cabinet Meeting said, “Our government has decided to remove the condition of mandatory qualification for contesting ina local body or Panchayati Raj elections. In a democratic framework, whether a person is literate or illiterate, when we can’t stop him from contesting Assembly elections, we have no right to stop him from contesting local body or Panchayati Raj polls.”
The Congress-led government has also decided that the mayor and chairman of urban local bodies will now be elected by the public instead of the indirect method introduced by the previous Vasundhara Raje led government.
In another move, The government has also decided to increase the old-age pension under which people getting ₹500 a month will now get ₹750 and those getting ₹750 will be entitled to ₹1,000 as pension per month.
Among others, the Cabinet decided that the photograph of Deendayal Upadhyay that features on government letter pads would be removed “with immediate effect” and replaced by the national emblem.

During the last government led by Vasundhara Raje, it was made compulsory to use the Deen Dayal Upadhyay logo on all government orders, notifications, and letterheads. The Congress earlier had protested when the order was issued.

The order was passed by the Vasundhara Raje government on December 11, 2017. The Congress party had then opposed the move, alleging that Raje government was trying to impose the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). According to them, the move was an insult to the national emblem and undemocratic in nature.

The BJP had also made it compulsory for all government libraries to keep books on the life of Deen Dayal Upadhyay. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government has also decided to revoke this decision.
