The indefinite shut down in the hills enters its 36th day on Thursday. The hills of West Bengal have been witnessing riots and protests by the agitated Gorkhas demanding for a separate Gorkhaland for themselves.

It has been more than a month now that GJM and other hill parties are demonstrating protest and rallies in Darjeeling. Mamata Banerjee led government has tried to control the situation but taking police actions have only added fuel to the already angry protestors. The protestors became violent when raids were conducted at the house of GJM Chief Bimal Gurung. The internet facilities and delivery of basic necessities have been banned by the government and GJM along with other hill parties have announced an indefinite shut down in the region till their demands are not fulfilled.

The parties have asked the Governor of West Bengal and the Centre to intervene and restore peace in the region, however, no solution has been reached yet.

The latest updates about the region are that GJM activists and other hill parties on Thursday held a demonstration outside the district magistrate’s office demanding the restoration of Internet services in the hills. Some political party activists dressed in traditional Nepali attire took out rallies early morning on Thursday. Police and security forces patrolled the streets and kept a tight security check at every entry and exit points.
