The elections for Vice-President of India is due on August 5 and both the ruling as well as opposition parties will be nominating their candidate for the polls. The last date to file the nomination for the polls is 18 July. Results for the polls will be announced on the same day.

Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi had organised a meeting on Tuesday for all the opposition parties to once again unite together and announce a consensus candidate for the polls. According to the resources, 18 parties have attended the meeting and jointly have decided to pick Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as their candidate for the Vice-Presidential polls.

Even the representative of JD(U) party, who had gone against and supported the NDA candidate for the Presidential polls, was present for the meeting. Other parties to attend the meeting are Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, TMC’s Derek O’ Brien, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, NC’s Omar Abdullah, SP’s Naresh Agarwal and BSP’s Satish Chandra Mishra.

17 non-NDA parties had met earlier also to decide the Presidential polls candidate over a social lunch organised by Sonia Gandhi.
