Arvind Kejriwal

Trouble mounted on Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday after the Central Government notified the President of India’s order confirming disqualification of 20 MLAs of his party.

President Ram Nath Kovind ordered their disqualification after the Election Commission had found them guilty of holding an “office of profit” by occupying the post of parliamentary secretaries. The order was made public by a notification in the official gazette last night.

This entire saga began in 2015 when the government of Delhi, led by CM Arvind Kejriwal, appointed 20 AAP MLAs as parliamentary secretaries. Upon a receiving a complaint from Delhi-based lawyer Prashant Patel, the Election Commission delved into the issue and concluded that the appointment of these MLAs amounts to office of profit, which is a legitimate ground for their disqualification.

Kejriwal and his party colleagues reacted to the news by claiming that the Chief Election Commissioner was acting at the behest of the BJP-led central government to further vendetta politics. They received widespread support from several other opposition leaders on this issue.

The Aam Aadmi Party has decided to approach Delhi High Court to seek an interim injunction against the President’s order. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on Monday.
