Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that the government’s stand regarding the Rohingyas will be cleared on 18 Sep to the Supreme Court. He refused to give any further information regarding this.

Rohingyas are the immigrants from Myanmar who have entered the territories of India as refugees seeking safety and shelter after being thrown out from their country. When questioned about the Ruling government led by Narendra Modi’s stand on the deportation of the Rohingyas, Rajnath Singh said that whatever is the decision of the government will be clear on 18 Sep when it files the affidavit in the court.

Two Rohingya immigrants had recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the government’s orders of deportation. The Supreme Court has fixed 18 Sep as the date for the hearing of the plea and the Home Minister said it will file the affidavit on 18 Sep.

Many politicians including the Union ministers and ministers from the Assam government had called the Rohingyas illegal immigrants in India and said they could be associated with terrorists and hence are a threat to the security of India. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Sep 5 had said that all the Rohingyas coming into India after being thrown out from Myanmar are illegal immigrants and will be soon deported back.

The affidavit that the government said was just a draft yet and claimed to submit it to the Supreme Court on 18 Sep was supposedly leaked. The affidavit read that the Centre had received contemporaneous inputs saying that the some of the Rohingyas were linked with the Pakistan- and Bangladesh-based terror organisations.

The Centre also blamed that a systematic and organised network of agents were deliberately facilitating illegal migration of the Rohingyas in India. “The continuity of Rohingya immigration and their continued stay in India, apart from being illegal, has serious national security ramification,” said the draft.

The Centre’s affidavit also read that many Rohingyas resemble the suspected sinister design of IS (Islamic State terror group) and other extremist groups, whose main aim was only to instigate communal and sectarian violence in the sensitive areas of the country.

Rohingyas are a minority ethnic group that belongs to the Rakhine state in Myanmar and recently after a military operation are being driven out from the country. The Rohingya community which majorly holds the Muslims are denied the citizenship of Myanmar. After the recent army attack, the community is wandering to nearby countries in search of shelter and security.
