Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday junked the plea filed by actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol seeking deployment of Central paramilitary forces in Gurdaspur during polling. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Candidate from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat, Sunny Deol, moved to the Court seeking deployment of the paramilitary forces citing the ‘fear of violence’.

The Court dismissed the plea filed by the actor after the poll office assured that appropriate actions and arrangements would be initiated on the issue. The Punjab and Haryana High Court bench comprising justices Daya Chaudhary and Sudhir Mittal while disposing of the said that action by the poll body has already initiated. Hence, no further action is needed.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat Sunny Deol in its plea stated that his Lok Sabha Seat is prone to violence. “The Lok Sabha Seat is a Border constituency and witnessed poll violence in the Panchayat polls conducted in the month of December 2018″, stated Deol in its plea.

The Lok Sabha Seat which will go to polls on May 19 has 1826 booths, out of which 111 booths are categorized as critical and 467 booths as vulnerable,” the petition said.

The actor had joined Bharatiya Janata Party on April 23 in presence of Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal. He has been named by the party for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat in Punjab – a seat which was represented by Vinod Khanna in the past.

Sunny’s Father Dharmendra had earlier in 2004 represented Bharatiya Janata Party from Bikaner Lok Sabha Seat. While Dharmendra’s wife and stepmother of Sunny Deol Hema Malini is a sitting MP from UP’s Mathura and seeking reelection in the national elections 2019.

Sunny in a run-up to the national polls is up against Sunil Jakhar of Congress and Peter Masih of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Actor Vinod Khanna had represented Gurdaspur Lok Sabha Seat many times from 1998 to 2017. Khanna passed away in April 2017. Later in by-polls of 2017, Congress Sunil Jakhar defeated BJP’s Swaran Salaria.

Punjab for its 13 Parliamentary seats will poll in a single phase on May 19 four days ahead of counting. General Elections have already started and is being held on all 7 phases from April 11 to May 19.

The Bharatiya Janata Party in the state has inked a pre-poll alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal. The NDA alliance in the national polls will take on  Congress, AAP, Punjab Democratic Alliance comprising seven parties including one floated by Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
