High Powered Panel headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that met on Saturday appointed Rishi Kumar Shukla, 1983 IPS Batch Officer of Madhya Pradesh as the new CBI Chief. The selection of the new CBI Director came a day after High-powered panel jot down names for CBI top Post in its second meeting on Friday.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has based on the panel recommended by the Committee constituted as per Section 4A(1) of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, approved the appointment of Shri Rishi Kumar Shukla, IPS (MP: 1983) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) vice Shri Alok Kumar Verma, IPS (AGMU: 1979), for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office,” read a letter by the Department of Personnel and Training.

Rishi Kumar Shukla is present Chairman of Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation in Bhopal. He was recently transferred from the post of DG of Madhya Pradesh Police to Chairman of Housing Corporation.

However, Mallikarjun Kharge who was also a member of Selection Committee in a dissent note to the Prime Minister expressed his objection over the appointment of IPS officer Rishi Kumar Shukla as the new CBI Director citing the officer’s lack of experience in anti-corruption investigations.

Congress Leader and representing Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge is believed to have raised some reservations regarding the choice of officers based on their ranking as per seniority and experience during Friday meeting as well.

Earlier on Friday, Supreme Court expressed concern over the delay in the process of appointing new CBI Chief. The Apex Court termed it as “adverse” to the appointment of interim chief for the agency for a long period. Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Arun Mishra and Naveen Sinha said the post of CBI director is sensitive and the government should have appointed a regular director by now.

CBI Top Post had felt vacant after Alok Kumar on January 10 was sacked by the High Powered panel and was asked to take Charge of DG Fire Services, which he had refused.

Nageshwar Rao was made Interim CBI Chief by high powered Panel that sacked Alok Verma from the CBI Top Post on January 10.
