The unrest and indefinite shut down in the hills of West Bengal enter its 27th  day on Monday, with the delivery of all the basic necessity item blocked in the region including the internet. All the shops, offices, schools everything is closed in Darjeeling except the medical shops.

In the past month, Darjeeling has been witnessing lots of violence and protest as the GJM and other local parties demand a separate state of Gorkhaland. In spite of Mamata Banerjee led government deploying armies to control the situations, the demand for Gorkhaland does not seem to move even a bit from its aim. The demand for Gorkhaland is adamant and it is like they will not settle for anything less than a separate state for the Gorkhas.

As per the latest updates about the unrest in the hills, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has given a 10-day deadline to the Centre to intervene and restore peace or the protest will be intensified. The 30-member Gorkhaland Movement Coordination Committee (GMCC), a body of all the hill parties is in Delhi and is likely to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to hold discussions.

In his statement to PTI Munish Tamang, national working president, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh said that “We have decided to meet the home minister with a copy of the resolution. The Centre needs to take concrete action.” He further expressed his disappointment with the West Bengal government saying that “all our programs are being carried out peacefully and in a democratic way, but it is extremely saddening that the (West Bengal) government is trying to portray the movement as an undemocratic one and using brutal force to curb it.”

All eyes are on the meeting of GMCC with Rajnath Singh scheduled for Tuesday, hoping to restore peace in the hills of West Bengal.
