After the sad demise of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) president M Karunanidhi on Tuesday, both the houses of the parliament unanimously decided to adjourn the working for Wednesday after they paid obituary to the DMK chief.

Former five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi died yesterday in Chennai at the age of 94. He was a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for six decades and had been the President of DMK for 50 years.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan informed the leaders of the demise of the DMK patriarch. She described him as a “visionary” and a “leader of the masses”.The House observed one-minute silence after which the House was prorogued for the day.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu paid obituary to the DMK leader. After that, he consulted lawmakers of various parties to discuss the adjournment for the day as Karunanidhi was neither a former nor current member of the Parliament. Describing him as one of the “tallest leaders” of the country, the leaders of the House unanimously agreed for the adjournment, reported TOI.

The Madras High Court, after hearing an urgent petition filed by DMK gave permission for the DMK chief’s burial at the Marina beach. The court observed there was no legal impediment to refuse the party’s demand, reported The Indian Express.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Chennai today to pay his respects to the leader. Several other leaders have flown to Chennai to pay their last respects to the DMK supremo who is kept at Rajaji Hall.
