Days after its poll disaster in the recently held national polls, the Congress on Friday registered a victory in Karnataka Civic Body Elections by bagging over 500 seats.

Raising doubts over EVM, Congress Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said glad to see people change their minds soon.

Surjewala in a tweet said, ‘A resounding win for Congress in the Urban Local Body Polls held on May 29th in Karnataka, a month after LS Polls on April 19/23. In LS polls, EVM’s under Central Elec Comm used. In ULB polls, EVM’s under State CEO used. Glad that people changed their mind and chose Congress!’

Surjewala said the EVMs in these elections were under State Election Commission unlike those which were Under Central Election Commission.

Congress in civil polls across state bagged 509 states out of 1221 wards in 56 Urban Local Bodies. While Congress parter JD-S who contested ULB Elections alone bagged 174 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party who swept the national polls in the state won 366 wards.

Polling on all 1221 wards – 7 City Municipal Councils for 217 seats, 30 Town Municipal Councils for 714 seats and 19 Town Panchayats for 290 seats – was held on May 29.

While Independent candidates emerged victorious in 160 wards, BSP got 3, CPI(M) 2 and other parties secured 7.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the state in the recently held national polls by bagging 25 seats while Congress and JD-S won one seat each. JD-S and Congress who are running a coalition government in the state have forged an alliance for Lok Sabha Polls too.

However, The rough-patches between JD(S)-Congress came to the forefront during a run-up to the national polls in the Karnataka with leaders of both parties accusing each other. The tussle between the coalition has benefited the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state which swept the polls in the state bagging 25 Lok Sabha Seat.

Congress after Karnataka State Polls last year has extended Support to JD(S) and Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy with an aim to keep BJP out of the power.

However, many attempts were made to topple the Coalition Government.
