Congress calls meeting of all general secretaries, PCC Chiefs, Incharges, to discuss Article 370

    • All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday called a meeting of all AICC General Secretaries, Pradesh Congress Committee Presidents, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders and state Incharges.

    Speaking to media, AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal said the meeting will take place on 9 August, Thursday. The party with a meeting will discuss the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Earlier on Tuesday, the grand old party held Congress Working Committee meeting, and adopted a resolution against the government’s move of revoking Article 370.

    The resolution adopted by the working committee of the grand old party stated that the unilateral, brazen and totally undemocratic manner in which Article 370 of the Constitution was abrogated and the State of Jammu and Kashmir was dismembered by misinterpreting the provisions of the Constitution.

    The meeting by AICC general secretary is called amid the growing disagreement within the party over Jammu and Kashmir Issue. A faction of leaders within the party are taking a different stand than the party and backing centre for revoking Article 370 and bifurcating state into two union territories.

    Senior leaders including Deependra Singh Hooda, Jyotiraditya Scindia backed Centre over the scrapping of Article 370. Scindia, who was also present in the CWC meeting yesterday, also welcomed the government’ move, however, he stated that the process could have been better.

    ‘I support the move on #JammuAndKashmir & #Ladakh and its full integration into union of India. Would have been better if the constitutional process had been followed. No questions could have been raised then. Nevertheless, this is in our country’s interest and I support this’, Scindia said in a tweet.

    The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved the resolution to scrap Article 370 from the valley and also cleared the bill that sought to bifurcate the Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir as a one Union Territory will have a legislature along with an L-G, while Ladakh without legislature.
