Hours after Rahul Gandhi officially stepping down from the party top post, Several Leaders urged Gandhi to give a second thought to the decision and reconsider his decision. Congress Stalwart Ahmed Patel took to Twitter saying that Rahul Gandhi will always remain my President.

Patel, in a series of tweet, said, ‘Rahul ji’s resignation letter is unfortunate We all are accountable for this defeat. He has, in a short span, already made a tremendous contribution in strengthening the party and we all believe his endeavour should continue’.

In another tweet, he added, ‘He is and will remain my leader, our leader & will continue to provide solid strength for the Congress’.

His statement comes after many sources within the party claimed that Rahul Gandhi will remain to be party president till the CWC accepts it.

There was wild speculation of Motilal Vora being appointed as the Interim Party President  – as claimed by Wikipedia. However, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh said that he has no information about this.

Apart from Ahmed Patel, many other stalwarts including Ashok Gehlot and Salman Khurshid also asserted that he will follow Rahul Gandhi.

Congress Stalwart and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also took to Twitter calling Rahul Gandhi resignation unfortunate. In a series of Tweets, Ashok Gehlot said, ‘Sh. Rahul Gandhi ji’s resignation is very disappointing. He has been leading the party with a clear vision and positive energy. He became the strongest voice of opposition in the country and lead from the front, raising issues crucial for the nation’.

He added, ‘We all wish that he continues to lead the party as he has been doing, bringing vigour, dynamism and youthful energy at all levels of the party’s organization. We are very hopeful that soon he will return to lead us and take the party forward, to a new and robust future’.

Asking Rahul Gandhi to reconsider his decision, Gehlot added, ‘He will certainly reconsider his decision as the party needs him, as the country needs him to fulfill the role of a very able opposition leader’.

He further asserted that defeat in the Lok Sabha is a collective responsibility. ‘The defeat in Lok Sabha elections is a collective responsibility and Rahul ji alone cannot be held responsible for it. We all urge him not to hold himself responsible for the same’, he said in another tweet.

‘The Congress party firmly believes in the political acumen of Rahul ji, he had successfully lead party to the victory in the recently held state assembly election in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and that in the recent past also in Gujarat’, Rajasthan CM said in another tweet.

‘Once again I am hopeful that Rahul ji will soon return to lead us with same zeal and spirit…We will bounce back and Congress Party would continue to defeat the fascist forces under Rahul ji’s dynamic leadership’, Ashok Gehlot concluded at last.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi officially resigned from the party Top Post saying as president of the Congress party he is responsible for the loss of the 2019 elections. He added that accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress president.

‘It is an honor for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organization a debt of tremendous gratitude and love. Jai Hind’, said Rahul Gandhi in a tweet while attaching a four-page letter.

Background 

In the National polls that concluded on May 23, the Congress put a flop show and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. It has also lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi, soon after the poll outcome, had on May 25 offered to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.
