Days after the poll debacle and facing a big embarrassment on failing to score from party’s bastion Amethi, Congress has tasked some of its Leaders to review the reason responsible for the defeat of Rahul Gandhi from the party stronghold of Amethi in the Lok Sabha elections.

Party has tasked Kishore Lal Verma and Zubair Khan to deliberate upon the reasons for the defeat of Rahul Gandhi. Verma, a representative of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Khan, who looks after the political work of Priyanka Gandhi, have reached Amethi and have been camping to understand what went wrong.

Both the Leaders are the part of the review team who will hold meetings with Block Pramukhs and Heads of Panchayats. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee member Rajiv Singh said that the party will review the reasons and the review will take place even at village levels.

Earlier, after the defeat of Congress President from Amethi, District President Yogendra Mishra had on May 24 resigned from his post taking the full responsibility of the defeat.

In the meantime, Congress leader Dharmendra Shukla had written a letter to Rahul Gandhi stating that his representative Chandrakant Dubey was responsible for the defeat.

Shukla has also demanded a probe into it, a party leader said.

In a big embarrassment to Congress, BJP Leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani in the recently held national polls turn out to be number 1 giant killer by defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Gandhi family’s bastion in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. Irani defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi with a margin of over 55,000 votes.

Rahul Gandhi has entered the Lok Sabha for the First time in 2004 contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha Seat. Amethi in the past has been represented by Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sanjay Gandhi. Barring 1977, and 1998, Amethi before 2019 has always elected a Congress Nominee.

It only won a single seat – Sonia Gandhi‘s Rae Bareli – out of the 80 Lok Sabha Seats of the state. It had got 6.3% vote share from Uttar Pradesh. The Congress faced a crushing defeat in national polls and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls.
