In a statement today, power ministry announced that India has become a net exporter of power for the first time. Net exporter means India exported more power than it imported in the time frame ranging from April 2016 to February 2017. Power ministry also added that the recent project of putting cross-border transmission lines to neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar will further increase India’s export amount.

Giving exact details, the ministry stated that in the period of April 2016 to February 2017, India exported 5,798 million units of power to Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar, which was 4 percent higher than what India imported from Bhutan. Bhutan has been a steady power supplier for India since 1980s.

The ministry also stated that new transmission lines to Myanmar and Bangladesh have helped the country to sell more in the last few months. Also, that the amount might increase in the coming months.

India has always had power deficiency, however, after the formation of NDA government in 2014, this is a sector which had attracted a lot of attention. Government has been working towards making India a power efficient country and use of renewable sources of energy has increased with the help of a lot of schemes by the government.
