India along with Pakistan is expected to hold a technical review meeting on Kartarpur corridor at the Zero-point today. Zero-point is the point at which the Kartarpur corridor converges from both the nations.

Dr. Mohammad Faisal. Foreign office spokesperson confirmed the meeting and told reporters that India agreed to Pakistan’s proposal to hold a meeting on Kartarpur corridor issue on 30 August. He also told that the neighboring nation Pakistan is very much committed to the completion of the project as announced by their Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The announcement of the meeting comes at an odd time when Pakistan is indulging in diplomatic warfare with India. Pakistan has sealed its airspace till 31 August. It has blocked aviation routes of Karachi airway. Furthermore, Pakistan has successfully tested its surface-to-surface ballistic missile ‘Ghaznavi’. This has created an environment of fear among the Indian counterparts regarding Pakistan’s intentions.

The strained relation between the two nations is seen as a consequence of the Indian government’s decision to repeal Article 370. Pakistan is not very happy with this decision and therefore called for downgrading all its ties with the Indian nation. Though India is continuously referring to the “Kashmir situation” as its own internal matter, Pakistan is accusing India of breaching a matter of bilateral relations.

Previously, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had urged the neighboring nation not to back out from its commitment of Kartarpur Corridor. Singh, as quoted by ANI, said, “With the momentous 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji just three months away, any slowdown in the project will lead to its non-completion in time for the historic event.”

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT:

Kartarpur Corridor is an ambitious cross-border corridor project between the neighboring nations of India and Pakistan, connecting the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur. It was first proposed in early 1999 Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, as a part of the Delhi–Lahore Bus diplomacy.
