Jagdeep Dhankhar takes oath as 14th Vice President of India

Jagdeep Dhankar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India on Thursday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of Office of Vice President to Jagdeep Dhankhar at a Swearing-in-Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Dhankhar paid tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. He placed a wreath at Gandhiji’s memorial and bowed before the Samadhi with folded hands.

Dhankhar said that he felt blessed, inspired and motivated to be ever in service of Bharat in the serene sublimity of Raj Ghat while paying respects to Pujya Bapu.

Dhankhar was elected as the Vice President on August the 6th. He secured 74.36 percent, the highest ever votes received in the last six vice presidential elections held since 1997. He defeated the opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate Margaret Alva to emerge as the winner.

Dhankhar, 70, was appointed as the 28th Governor of Bengal by President Ram Nath Kovind on 30 July 2019.  He resigned from the post on July the 17th after his name was announced as the Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance.

He was a Lok Sabha MP from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan from 1989 to 1991. He was also a Union Minister in the government of VP Singh and Chandrashekhar from 1989 to 1991.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and many other dignitaries were present on this occasion at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Vice President of India is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Upper House, Rajya Sabha. The responsibility of running the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha is also the Vice President of India. Dhankhar’s tenure will be till August 10, 2027.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Jagdeep Dhankhar on taking oath as Vice President of India.

In a tweet today, the Prime Minister said, “Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. I congratulate him on becoming India’s Vice President and wish him the very best for a fruitful tenure.”
