Jayalalithaa Sasikala

Close to two months after the death of former Tamilnadu CM Jayalalithaa, Supreme Court on Monday announced that it will pronounce the verdict in Jayalalithaa corruption case within a week. Jayalalithaa and her close aid and now general secretory of AIADMK, Sasikala Natarajan are both accused in the case, which was registered in 1996 for amassing illegal & unaccounted wealth.

In 2015, the Karnataka High Court had acquitted Jayalalithaa in the case and that made Karnataka’s congress government move to the supreme court against the verdict. Before that in 2014, a special court in Bengaluru had found her guilty and had sentenced former Tamilnadu CM to 4 years in imprisonment along with VK Sasikala. Following the decision, she had vacated the CM post for a while, which was again taken by her after the assembly elections in 2016.

After Sasikala was elected as the general secretory of party on Sunday, one of the expelled MPs from AIADMK, Sasikala Pushpalata moved to election commission questioning Sasikala’s eligibility to hold such an important position, provided she is facing corruption charges. However, no comment has been made yet by the election commission. VK Sasikala is set to swear in as Tamilnadu CM on Tuesday or Thursday.
