Karnataka Assembly Speaker

Ahead of BJP government floor test in the house, Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on Sunday disqualified 14 more rebel MLAs of Congress and JD-S under the anti-defection law. Last week, the Assembly Speaker had disqualified 3 rebels – 2 from Congress and one Independent – under the same anti-defection law.

The disqualification of 14 more rebels, 11 from Congress and 3 from Janata Dal (Secular) from the House will further reduce the majority mark and will make a cakewalk for the BJP to prove its majority.

The action on all 17 MLAs reduces the majority mark to 104 in the House. BJP has currently 105 MLAs in the House and as claimed by the party it has also support from Independent lawmakers.

With the quick turn of events and disqualification of 17 MLAs, the effective strength in 225-member assembly is now 207, leaving the Assembly Speaker. The magical majority mark in the state is 104.

Speaking to media, Assembly Speaker justified his controversial move by saying that he has used his judicial conscience. The sudden move came on the backdrop of speculations that BJP is planning to move a no-confidence motion against the Assembly Speaker in the Assembly if he doesn’t voluntarily give up the post.
