Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan completely ruled out all chances of his Communist Party (Marxist) aligning itself with Congress to keep Sangh forces at bay in the state, explaining that such an alliance between rivals will not be accepted by people for lacking credibility.

While speaking on the second day of a four-day seminar organized by the CPI-M in Malappuram, Vijayan said “Communist politics will suffer” if compromises are made by Left parties by forming alliances with parties like Congress just to oppose RSS and BJP.

He said, “In CPI-M’s fight against the BJP, the party cannot take Congress on its side. Previous experience shows that such an alliance lacks credibility and people will not accept it.”

The chief minister made these remarks just one day after CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy pitched support in favour of a broad opposition unity against “pro-corporate” and “prime enemy” BJP that follows fascist policies.

Vijayan ruled out this argument by saying that it is only the Left parties that can stall BJP and its supporters today as the Congress presently “does not uphold the tradition of fighting communalism” and this has been reflected in Gujarat’s elections results last year.
