The second term of general secretary Sitaram Yechury, a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal, ends next month and a third term for the leader was proposed by the West Bengal unit of the CPM.

After a long four hours of heated discussion in the meeting held by the CPM central committee on Tuesday decided against nominating Yechury for a third consecutive Rajya Sabha term. The decision was taken after a vote by raising hands. A party leader said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the party rules no CPM leader can represent the party in the Upper House for more than two terms. He also added that another reason for not nominating the leader was that the Kerela unit of the party was against taking help of Congress to get Yechury re-elected.

The CPM Chief also had a meeting with Kerela Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he spoke to the CM regarding his statement made in a press interview saying that Yechury cannot be sent to the Rajya Sabha with the help of the Congress.

The party’s Politburo had already rejected the proposal before it came up for discussion by the central committee on Tuesday.

The election for six West Bengal Rajya Sabha seats will be held on 8 August. Nomination for the poll is to be filed before 28 July.
