Due to abundant rainfall in Karnataka this year, the four major dams of the Cauvery river have reached the ‘full-reservoir level’. This has delighted the farmers and has come as a relief after eight years.

HD Kumaraswamy, Chief Minister of Karnataka called this “nature’s solution” to the problems of sharing of waters between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In an interview with the Economic Times, Kumaraswamy revealed that he will soon be visiting Tamil Nadu to convince the political parties and farmers to allow ‘his government build a dam across the Cauvery’ which will be in the interest of both the states.

He said, “As someone coming from the farming community, I understand the distress farmers face. That’s why I released water this year from Kabini dam even before Tamil Nadu asked and our own KRS filled. Not as CM, but as someone representing farmers, I intend to meet all political parties and farming outfits in Tamil Nadu and request them to accept our offer with a large heart and generosity.”

Kumaraswamy told ET reporters that his state has already released more than 85 thousand million cubic feet (tmcf) of water. He said, “When nature is favorable we must make most of it. A dam at Makedatu, being downstream, will not help our farmers, but will help Tamil Nadu farmers. In times of drinking water crisis in Bengaluru, we may use 2 to 3 tmcf, and use water for power generation.”

He added, “In another week, Mettur and Bhavani reservoirs will be full. Then excess water will flow into the sea.” Kumaraswamy assured that the construction of the new dam will ‘prevent wasteful discharge of Cauvery water into the sea’, as reported by Economic Times.
