Bihar citizens are soon to find some relaxation in the state’s liquor ban law. In  April 2016, Nitish Kumar’s government took a huge step by banning the sale, production, and consumption of alcohol.

The prohibition law stated arrest of the adult members of a family if liquor was found at home. The arrest of first time transgressor, and seizing of vehicle or property where liquor was found. The government has decided to make amendments to the strict prohibition law.

The amendments will be introduced during the monsoon session which will begin from July 20. Several arrests have been made since the implementation of the prohibition law.

The ruling party received flak from the opposition parties, the prohibition law termed as “draconian”. The law was misused which led to the suffering of the common people. Many scheduled caste people were harassed by the Police in the name of the stringent prohibition law.

The amendment will include “reduction in the quantum of the sentence” of the offenders violating the law. Chief Minister’s official commented,”The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has approved an amendment to the prohibition law to curb its misuse.”
