Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan threatened the BJP government to join the protests observed by the Dalits next month if their demands are not fulfilled.

The LJP has been demanding the Central government for four months now to “pass an ordinance which will restore the original provisions” of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Chirag Paswan, LJP leader and Paswan’s son told the media, “We are running out of patience as no action has been taken to restore the act as yet.” He said in the conference, “On April 2, agitations were held across the country. Similar agitations have been announced by some organisations on a large-scale on August 9. We want the government to bring an ordinance to restore the act before that. Our Dalit Sena will take to the streets if it is not done”, reported Hindustan Times.

LJP also publically criticised the government when Justice AK Goel was declared the Chairperson of National Green Tribunal. Many other National Democratic Alliance Dalit leaders “expressed concern” over his appointment as he was among the two judges who allegedly called for the dilution of the provisions of the SC/SC Act.

Chirag Paswan said that his party has written to Prime Minister Modi saying Goel’s appointment has sent a “wrong message” to Dalits. It looks like BJP is rewarding him for the verdict, he said. He also suggested Modi government take measures in order to clear its image as “anti-Dalit” which is portrayed by the Opposition.

LJP MP warned about the protests on August 10 and said they can be worse than those observed on April 2, if the demands of Dalits were not heard.

LJP has six MPs in the Lower House supporting the coalition government.
