In a major blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tripura BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik quit the party and is likely to join the Congress.

It is also expected that the Congress is going to nominate him as party candidate in West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency.

Subal Bhowmik’s decision came after his midnight meeting with PCC President Pradyot Kishore Manikya.

Manikya had reportedly agreed to field him in the West Tripura constituency.

On Tuesday, Subal Bhowmik submitted his resignation to the President, Tripura Pradesh BJP, citing that ‘unavoidable circumstances’ compelled him to relinquish his position as Office bearer in Tripura Pradesh BJP.

Mr. Bhowmik told The Hindu on March 19 that he is joining the Congress today. added that Rahul Gandhi is going to announce his candidature from his rally at Khumulwng tomorrow.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address an election rally on March 20 at Khumpui Academy ground in Khumulwng.

Subal Bhowmik also assured that a large number of his supporters will accompany him to the Congress Bhavan to renew his political career in the Congress.

PCC General Secretary Baptu Chakraborty termed Mr. Bhownik’s decision as ‘homecoming’.

Previously, Subal Bhowmik left the Congress a few years ago following a conflict with the State leadership.
