Lucknow, May 9 A sum of Rs 24 lakh, reportedly belonging to Raj Kishore Singh, the Congress candidate from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, was seized from a vehicle in Basti on Thursday.

The SUV carried a pass issued in the name of Raj Kishore Singh and officials said that the money was apparently being taken for distribution among voters.

Basti Superintendent of Police M.P. Chaturvedi, who headed the flying squad, said two persons who were in the vehicle had been arrested and were being interrogated.

Raj Kishore Singh, a former Lawmaker of Samajwadi Party, had in April joined Indian National Congress. Party has named Singh against sitting BJP MP Harish Dwivedi. While BSP has named Ram Prasad Chaudhary.

In 2014 national polls, BJP Harish Dwivedi won the seat with a slim margin of 30,000 votes.

Congress in a run-up to the national elections in the state has forged an alliance with Apna Dal (Faction), Mahan Dal, Jan Adhikar Party among others. The party in the battle of ballots is taking on Bharatiya Janata Party and Mahagathbandhan comprises of BSP, SP, and RLD.

General Elections 2019 is being held across seven phases starting April 11 to May 19. 51 seats under Phase-V voted on May 6. Counting of the votes will be held on May 23. Voting of the remaining 118 constituencies will be held in two phases slated on May 12 and May 19.

Basti Lok Sabha Seat goes to the polls on May 12.
