The world’s largest democracy is witnessing the seventh and the last phase of Lok Sabha elections for the 17th Lok Sabha. To ensure the vote of every individual, the state administration of Sundernagar in Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, Himachal Pradesh, has set up an auxiliary polling booth at the institution for children with special abilities for the last phase of parliamentary elections on May 19.

Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma the State District Magistrate of Sundernagar said that “this year the motto of Election Commission is to make voting accessible for specially abled people.” He added that “we have set up an auxiliary polling booth at the institution for children with special abilities involving the children who are visually and hearing impaired so that they can vote.” He said that the administration has sensitized people decide this audio signage, wheelchair facility, virtual film and ramps will be provided to the people to ensure that every individual is able to cast their vote.

The civil administration in the state will be providing bus service to the polling station for the old and differently abled people. The presiding officer will be provided with the ballot paper on which the names of the candidates will be written to make the process easy for the specially abled people.

Sunder Nagar assembly constituency has around 635 specially abled people out of which 45 people have asked for wheelchairs and 11 people will be accompanied by the volunteers to the polling booths.

The specially-abled students express their excitement of voting for the first time saying that the ballot paper will ease the process of voting which will have the names of candidates in Braille.

Manjeet Singh Saini the assistant professor in the state said that this time the School has been turned into an auxiliary booth and school administration has come up with an audio clip to guide the specially-abled students so that they can vote.

All Parliamentary constituencies in Himachal Pradesh will vote in the seventh and last phase of Lok Sabha elections where 59 constituencies will take part in the voting. The results for the 17th Lok Sabha will be announced on May 23.
