Devendra Fadnavis, who took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the second consecutive term on Saturday, has stepped down from the position since the Bharatiya Janata party doesn’t have the numbers to form government in the state.

Addressing the media Fadnavis said, “When Ajit Pawar met me on Saturday, he confirmed having the support of entire NCP. Hence, we moved forward with the alliance. But surprisingly, today he informed me that he doesn’t have enough number and stepping down from the position of Deputy Chief Minister.”

He said, “We waited for them (Shiv Sena) for a long time but they didn’t respond and instead talked to Congress-NCP. People who never stepped outside Matoshree (Thackeray residence) to meet anyone were going door to door to make government with NCP and Congress.”

There will be no floor test on Wednesday as the BJP doesn’t have the numbers to prove majority on the floor of the house.

Earlier, Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra while NCP’s Ajit Pawar took the oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The oath was administered by the Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari at Raj Bhawan.
