Maharashtra Cabinet on Monday approved centre’s scheme of 10 per cent reservation to the economically weaker section among the general category in government jobs and educational institutions across the state, reported ANI.

The state government has decided to follow the Central government model of 10 per cent EWS quota for general category people having less than ₹8 lakh annual income.

With this, Maharashtra has become the seventh state after Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Assam to have approved the bill to implement the reservation. Jharkhand to implement 10% quota for EWS category: CM announced on Tuesday

The Maharashtra state Assembly, in November, had passed a Bill proposing 16 per cent reservation under Socially and Educationally Backward Class, paving way for reservation to Marathas in the state.

Earlier on Friday, Bihar Cabinet also okayed the Centre’s 10 per cent scheme granting reservation to EWS for general category. The Bihar State government would now table a new bill regarding the implementation of EWS quota in the coming budget session.

The Lok Sabha on January 8 had cleared the way for 10percent EWS quota Bill. Rajya Sabha, on the last day of winter session also passed the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 with 165 ‘ayes’ that seeks to provide reservation to upper caste while 7 voted against the bill.

Earlier on January 25, The Top Court issued a notice to Centre on pleas challenging the constitutional amendment that gives 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education for economically weaker section of the general category. However, the top Court refused to stay implementation of 10 per cent reservation to the economically weaker section of general category. A bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi says “we will examine the issue”.

Earlier on Jan 11, a day after the upper House of the Parliament, Rajya Sabha cleared the passage for the passage of the bill granting 10 per cent reservation to EWS of the general category, a petition challenging the bill filed in the Top Court.

The petition filed by the NGO, Youth for Equality, stated that amendment brought up by the government granting 10 per cent reservation to the upper castes violates several basic features of the constitution.
