Congress party on Sunday released the first list of candidates for the forthcoming Maharashtra polls. The list contains the names of 51 candidates in total. Among all the contesting individuals, the prominent figures include the former chief minister Ashok Chavan and state party chief Vijay Balasaheb Thorat.

Balasaheb Thorat will contest from Sangamner constituency while Ashok Chavan will fight from Bhokar constituency.

The candidates have been finalized after the approval of the Central Election Committee of the Congress party. Maharashtra will go to polls for its 288 assembly seats on October 21. Counting of the votes will take place on October 24.

Nitin Raut who heads the party’s SC Department will contest the elections from Nagpur North constituency, which is a reserved seat. Former home minister Sushilkumar Shinde‘s daughter Pariniti has been given ticket from Solapur Central assembly. While former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh‘s son Amit will contest from the Latur City seat.

Important Dates for Maharashtra Polls-

  • The detailed notification will be issued on September 27.
  • Filing of nominations for will begin from September 27 to October 4.
  • Scrutiny of applications will be done on October 5.
  • Nominations withdrawal can be done till October 7.
  • Elections will take place on October 21.
  • Counting of votes will be done on October 24.

Congress has decided to contest on 123-125 seats with NCP in the upcoming polls.
