Mamata Banerjee

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced her concerns regarding implementation of GST and added that the state of Bengal will not support GST in its current format and that the union government will have to amend the bill in accordance with the suggested guidelines.

Her statement has come less than a month before the official implementation of GST. At a meeting with administrative officials in south 24 paragana district, Mamata Banerjee said that the GST in current form does not support unorganised and poor sections and till the time it is not made equal for all, Bengal government will not support the bill. She also added that her government will soon write a letter to union finance ministry and minister of finance with the suggested changes.

Earlier, Amit Mitra, Finance Minister in Bengal Government had raised his concerns about a few points in GST. He had stated that the current sections of GST will not be fair to each section of the society. According to him, Bengal government is trying to reduce tax rates on some of the essential items, without which, the progress and schemes of the government will be negatively effected.
