West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to discuss the unrest in the hills for Gorkhaland and the flood like situations arising in many parts of the state. The meeting was done after Narendra Modi suggested Mamata to meet Rajnath, during a conversation they held after the oath taking ceremony of President Kovind on Tuesday.
As per officials, the water level in several rivers in some districts, including West Midnapore’s river Shilabati that were flowing above the danger level had started to come decrease. But due to overnight heavy rainfall in the eastern metropolis and several districts of West Bengal again rose the water level way above the danger mark and created flood like situations in many districts of West Bengal.
Besides West and East Midnapore, heavy rains overnight led to water-logging in Burdwan’s Asansol, Hooghly’s Baidyabati, Garia, Barasat, Chittaranjan Avenue, Ultadanga, Baguiati, Behala and many other areas affecting thousands of people.
Taking precautions, keeping in mind the prevailing flood like situations in West Bengal, control rooms have been set up at the state secretariat Nabanna, and leaves of all officers and employees of the Irrigation Department are canceled till October 31.
